In January 2021, I felt a desire to make a meaningful impact and serve others using the skills and experience I had gathered over the years. After prayer and reflection, I decided to take the leap and start my business, Phoenix Media. It was a bold move, but one I’ve never regretted. Today, more than three years later, I have the privilege of working with clients both locally and internationally. This journey has not only transformed my professional life but has also significantly contributed to my personal growth.
As my business has grown, so have I. It has boosted my confidence, allowed me to have fun doing what I love, and most importantly, it has enabled me to serve others in meaningful ways. Here are a few of the key lessons I’ve learnt along the way:
Don’t Aim for Perfection
When I first started, I wanted every piece of content and every email to be as polished and professional as possible—almost perfect. While giving your best effort is essential, striving for perfection often leads to overthinking and self-doubt. Whatever your service offering may be, aim to deliver excellence, but understand that your approach will evolve over time. You’ll experiment with new ideas, adapt strategies, and refine your brand along the way. As you grow, so will your confidence in your offerings. Ultimately, you’ll build a brand that truly reflects your values, morals, and vision.
Put Yourself Out There
Networking has been one of the most effective ways for me to build relationships and attract the clients I want to work with. It has opened doors to exciting projects and valuable collaborations. Meeting like-minded people and getting your name and business out there is, in my opinion, the best way to market your business. I’ve found that attending events and sharing about my business has been particularly beneficial. It allows people to get to know me and understand what I do. You never know who might be in the room and could benefit from your product or service.
If you’re just starting out, create social media pages and launch a newsletter to kickstart your marketing. It’s free, helps you build credibility with your audience, and is a fantastic way to educate people about your business.
Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day, and Neither Is Your Business
Building a successful business takes time—just like Rome, it won’t happen overnight. Your brand, skills, and network will all need time to develop and mature. There’s no need to rush or feel pressured to accomplish everything at once. Focus on laying a strong foundation, one brick at a time. Embrace the journey of lifelong learning, experimenting, and refining your approach. Each step, no matter how small, is progress. Patience and persistence are your greatest allies in building something meaningful and lasting. Remember, sustainable growth is often the result of steady and thoughtful effort, not haste.
Be Your Authentic Self
Your uniqueness is your strength. People want to know who you are and work with the real you. Don’t be afraid to show your authentic self—embrace what makes you different. By being true to who you are, you’ll naturally attract the right people and clients who resonate with your values and vision. Remember, you started this business with purpose, and the right clients will find you when you stay true to yourself. Trust that your authenticity will lead you to the opportunities and connections meant for you.
Ask for Help
One of the most valuable things I’ve learned is the importance of asking for help. I’ve surrounded myself with a community of fellow entrepreneurs, and I’m never afraid to reach out for advice. By having conversations with those who are further along in their journeys, I’ve gained insights and learnt from their experiences. I’ve asked questions and guidance in areas that were not my expertise.
Another way I’ve sought help is through outsourcing. Running a business involves wearing many hats—admin, accounting, marketing—and it can be overwhelming. Sometimes, the best decision is to outsource these tasks to experts who specialise in those areas. Not only does this allow you to focus on the day-to-day operations and growth of your business, but it also helps you build valuable relationships and support other entrepreneurs in the process.
Entrepreneurship is a journey, not a sprint, and it’s one you don’t have to go through alone. Take your time to build lasting business relationships, embrace lifelong learning, and grow your business steadily and sustainably. I hope this article has offered you some valuable insights. Remember, sharing your business story and the lessons you’ve learned can inspire and help others on their own journeys. Together, we can all grow and succeed.
